Day VII: Final Fantasy IV

Villans

Golbez

Originally named Theodore, Golbez is Cecil’s older brother.  While he is the main enemy for the majority of the game, the whole time he has had his mind warped by Zemus and is nothing more than a puppet carrying out his plan.  While under Zemus’ control though, Golbez manages to be quite a bastard.  He used Baron’s military and technological might to crush otherwise peaceful kingdoms without mercy.  He also set lose the Four Elemental Archfiends on the world as well.  He takes Kain’s mind over as well, forcing him to betray his deal friends.  He also manages to make Cecil and company retrieve two crystals for him by first kidnapping Rosa and then later by turning Kain on everyone again.

Despite being under Zemus’ control, it does appear that during the game, he has some recollection of his past.  In the Tower of Zot, he has every opportunity to kill Cecil, yet decides not to.  Later, as FuSoYa brings him to his senses, he realizes that it was because he was Cecil’s older brother.

At the end of the game, Golbez travels to the moon with FuSoYa to kill Zemus but ends up failing when he transforms into Zeromus.  After Cecil’s party defeats him for good, Golbez is ashamed of his prior actions and wishes to slumber with the rest of the Lunarians, rather than return to the people he tormented for so long.

Zemus

The Lunarians originally came by Earth in order to bestow on them their technological and magical advances.  Eventually, their plan was to enlighten the human race to a point so that the two races would be able to live in peace.  KluYa, Cecil’s father, was the original ambassador to the Earth.  He brought the Lunar Whale with him when he landed by Mysidia and sealed it away there.  He also taught the people there magic, as well as the technologies of the Devil’s Road and airships.  Zemus was the only Lunarian, who, for reasons not explained in the game or any re-make, hated this idea and the entire human race.  It’s quite possible he simply saw the human race as beneath the Luniarians, but either way, he advocated that they simply wipe out life on Earth and use it as a new planet for the Luniarian race.

Fearing Zemus’ hatred and plans, the Lunarian’s forced him into a deep slumber and sealed him away.  However, thanks to Zemus’ massive physic powers his mind still stayed awake.  Thanks to this, he was able to control minds with those of Lunarian blood, and the only ones left on Earth were Golbez and Cecil.  Zemus was able to easily warp Golbez’s mind; however, he couldn’t fully control Cecil.  By using an Archfiend to kill and take the place of the king of Baron, he lead Cecil down the path of the Dark Knight; however, that eventual control was broken when Cecil became a Paladin.

Zemus used Golbez to try to carry out his plan of destroying all life on Earth so that the Lunarians could take it over.  However, Cecil and company foiled this plan.  Eventually Zemus was destroyed by Golbez and FuSoYa, but was able to revive himself and transform into Zeromus due to his massive amount of hatred.  This form, however, was destroyed by Cecil and company, putting Zeromus to rest for good.
